How does a Mirena IUD work?
The Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the most commonly-used and effective types of hormonal birth control available in Australia.
It consists of a small, plastic device that is inserted into the uterus and slowly releases progestogen, a synthetic hormone which inhibits ovulation and thickens the mucus in your cervix to prevent pregnancy.
Besides being used for contraceptive purposes, a Mirena can also be helpful for treating heavy periods.
Depending on your health needs and the advice of your doctor, your Mirena may need to be replaced every 5 – 7 years.
What other contraceptive treatments are available?
Our doctors can also help with Implanon insertions and removals.
If you’d like further information or assistance with other contraception alternatives and treatments, talk to one of our doctors with experience in sexual health at our clinic.
