Get support to manage your COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a term that covers a range of long-term lung conditions. And while it can include conditions like emphysema, chronic asthma, and chronic bronchitis, it’s important to note that asthma or bronchitis by themselves aren’t COPD, and COPD doesn’t present as these conditions—but the two can coexist.

COPD is typically caused by exposure to noxious fumes, smoke, dust, and chemicals, which damage the lungs.

It can affect your lungs in different ways, with the main symptoms being shortness of breath, and a persistent, mucousy cough, making it difficult to breathe in your daily life.

While your symptoms can worsen over time, the good news is that with support from your GP, you can get a tailored plan that supports you to manage your symptoms and control any further damage to your lungs.

At Brecken Health Bunbury, our team provides personalised support that helps you manage your COPD, allowing you to get on and live your life.

Our COPD services include:

  • Diagnosis. Your doctor will help you to understand the specific symptoms that you’re experiencing, and provide a diagnosis on your condition to determine if you have COPD, or a different condition.
  • Personalised management plans. Your GP will create a personalised plan for you, based on your lifestyle and the severity and progression of your COPD, which provides you with advice and support to manage your symptoms.
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation. We provide a pulmonary rehabilitation program that supports you to live with COPD. Your rehabilitation program combines exercise training (suitable to your level) and education to help increase your physical activity level, reduce symptoms, and improve your ability to carry out daily activities.
  • Oxygen therapy. With COPD, your lungs don’t allow you to get as much oxygen as you need. We provide oxygen therapy to help improve and maintain adequate oxygen levels in your blood, with training on the safe use of oxygen equipment at home.
  • Smoking cessation support. Reducing or quitting smoking is a key tool in slowing the progression of COPD. We offer support programs, including counseling and nicotine replacement therapy, to help you quit smoking and improve your lung health.

You don’t have to live with COPD alone

Our GPs provide a range of support services to help you manage your COPD symptoms. We also provide regular monitoring and follow-ups to assess symptoms and lung function.
